Ted Efremoff
Born in Moscow, Russia, I am a cross-disciplinary artist engaged with performance, video, installation and social practice. Spurred by my personal interest in social justice, I envision collaborative activity as an instrument that builds critical relationships between people. I am interested in discourse as a solution to the personal and cultural constraints ingrained within prevailing political, economic, and social power structures.
We are proud to celebrate Fulbright alumnus Ted Efremoff, whose award-winning documentary A Refugee’s Guide to Rome is now available for streaming on multiple platforms.
Ted was a Fulbright U.S. Student Researcher at the National Academy of Arts during AY 2008–09. His Fulbright project explored visual arts and documentary storytelling in Bulgaria, laying the foundation for a career that continues to examine profound questions about history, identity, and the human experience.
Inspired by his own family’s journey to the United States as immigrants, Ted’s latest documentary follows Joseph, a refugee rebuilding his life in Rome. Interweaving Joseph’s story with the ancient tale of Aeneas, the film offers a moving reflection on exile, resilience, belonging, and the universal search for home.
Since its premiere, A Refugee’s Guide to Rome has earned widespread recognition on the international festival circuit, receiving numerous awards for Best Documentary Feature as well as honors for directing, cinematography, editing, producing, and sound design. Its thoughtful storytelling and artistic vision have resonated with audiences around the world.
